North Lake Tahoe lost a pioneer in the ski racing community February 19, 2010. Bud Jones moved to Tahoe in 1949, learning to ski, becoming a ski instructor and getting involved with the Lake Tahoe Ski Club. During his years in Tahoe he participated in several community organizations including heading the Board of Realtors. His passion was coaching and ski racing and he was dedicated to helping kids in North Lake Tahoe. He was a coach who taught the basics and believed in the value of a strong technical foundation, which lead to many successful ski racers reaching their goals. Bud enjoyed serving the community and through his years in Tahoe he supported ski racing and the Lake Tahoe Ski Club and its commitment to developing ski racers.
The family of Bud Jones is proud to announce the establishment of The Bud Jones Memorial scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a ski racer (U16 and older) who has a well rounded life with an emphasis on community involvement, citizenship, offering assistance to others, good sportsmanship, an exceptional work ethic, a strong belief in education and challenging oneself academically while maintaining a commitment to the sport of skiing to reach his or her goals.
Interested applicants should submit a letter addressing the above mentioned characteristics along with relevant ski racing results and awards, grades, pertinent extra credit work and how the financial aid would benefit their future ski racing goals. Additionally, applicants will need to provide two to three letters of recommendation from teachers, coaches and/or friends along with an essay of approximately 500 words explaining how ski racing enhances and makes a difference in their life.
